“You’re not welcome,” my mum wrote in an email. “This is my resort.”

I forwarded it: “Cancel your event—owner’s order.”

My manager replied: “NO.”

My stomach dropped… because someone had already passed me by.

The email came in just after half seven, while the kettle clicked off in my flat and the rain made soft grey lines down the kitchen window.

I had one shoe on, one shoe off, and a mug of tea I had not yet touched.

The subject line was blunt enough to make my chest tighten before I opened it.

RETIREMENT WEEKEND DETAILS.

That was how Diane Patterson, my mother, chose to tell me I was not welcome at her retirement party.

No phone call.

No small, careful warning.

No attempt to soften it with the kind of family politeness that makes a slap sound like a favour.

Just an email.

“You’re not invited to my retirement party,” she wrote.

Then, as if the first sentence had not done enough damage, she added, “This is my beach resort. My celebration.”

She said my presence would ruin the mood.

She said everyone had worked hard to make the weekend special.

She said it would be better if I respected her wishes.

She copied in my aunt, my brother, and two cousins.
