At exactly 7 a.m., my bank manager called and asked me to come to the branch with my ID because there was a £100,000 balance in my name that I had never approved.

The kettle had just clicked off when the phone rang.

Outside, rain pressed lightly against the kitchen window, turning the morning grey before it had properly begun.

My coffee had not finished dripping into the pot.

The house was quiet apart from the hum of the fridge and the faint tick of the clock above the microwave.

When the bank’s main number appeared on my screen, I answered with a cold feeling already forming in my stomach.

Banks do not ring at 7 a.m. to chat.

“Sloan,” the branch manager said, his voice low and careful, “I need you to come into the branch with photo ID.”

I stood very still beside the counter.

“What’s this about?”

There was a pause.

It was not long, but it was long enough.

“There is a £100,000 credit card balance in your name.”

For a moment, I heard the coffee machine drip once into the pot.

Then again.

It sounded absurdly normal.

I had not opened a card.

I had not signed an application.

I had not authorised anything close to that amount.

I was careful with money because I had learnt early that people who called you difficult usually meant you had noticed something they hoped you would ignore.
