It was my father.

Mum accepted them in front of him.

She prayed.
Every evening, after washing up, she would stand at the bottom of the stairs with one hand on the banister.

I barely looked up at first.

It hit the edge of the coffee table, then the floor, breaking into white pieces across the carpet.
Mum came running in with a tea towel in her hands.
“What’s happened?”
I tried to answer, but I had no language for what I was seeing.
So I pointed.
She followed my finger.

Mum was shaking so badly the tea towel slipped from her fingers.

Valeria did not answer straight away.
She looked down at her hands.
Then she lifted her face to the camera.
“The man everyone believes is a good person,” she said.

Mum whispered, “No.”
I did not ask what she meant.

My father.
Mum collapsed.
I lunged for her, but too late.
She folded sideways against the armchair and hit the carpet with a soft, awful thud.

I looked at Mum.

Dad glanced at her, and something passed across his expression.

Mum’s hand came out from under the cushion.

She pushed the object into my palm.
