The Note Said My Baby Cried All Day—But I Had No Child-heuh

I found a note in my letterbox that said, “Your baby cries all day.” But I didn’t have any children.

Not the accusation.

Not the threat.

The torn edge.

It is strange what the mind holds on to when something does not make sense.

I stood in the communal hall with my bag slipping from my shoulder and my keys digging into my palm.

Someone upstairs closed a door.

A lift hummed behind me.

Outside, rain tapped lightly against the glass panel by the entrance.

I read the note again.

Your baby cries all day.
