Sister Put A £560,000 Mortgage In My Name — Then Mum Reached For The Police Report-heuh

The bank said I owed £560,000 on a mortgage I never signed.

My sister had used my name to buy the house she called her dream.

And my parents had not simply looked away.

They had supported her.

I found out on a Tuesday, with rain tapping lightly against the kitchen window and the kettle clicking off behind me.

The envelope was waiting on the mat when I came in from work, thick and white, the sort of post that makes you stand still before you even open it.

It had my name on it.

My full name.

The flat number was right too, which almost annoyed me more, because half my parcels ended up with the neighbour downstairs, yet this terrible thing had found me perfectly.

I took it into the kitchen and set it beside my mug.

The mug had a chipped handle.

The tea had gone too strong.

The washing-up bowl was still full from breakfast because I had left in a hurry, telling myself I would deal with it later.

That was the sort of life I had.
