Bank Demanded £560,000 For A Mortgage My Sister Put In My Name-heuh

The bank said I owed £560,000 on a mortgage I never signed, and at first I thought it had to be a mistake.

There are mistakes that make you roll your eyes, and there are mistakes that make the whole room narrow around you.

This was the second kind.

The letter came on a Tuesday, folded into a thick white envelope with my full name printed so neatly it felt personal.

Outside, rain had been tapping at the kitchen window since morning, and my little rented flat had that damp-coat smell that never quite leaves in bad weather.

The kettle had just clicked off.

A mug sat by the sink, tea bag still floating in it, because I had been too tired to finish making it properly.

I remember those details because my mind clung to them before it allowed me to understand the letter.

Mortgage arrears.

Possible repossession.

For a few seconds I simply stared at the number, waiting for it to change into something sane.

It did not.

I read the page again, slower this time, my finger tracking each line as though I were reading instructions for someone else’s disaster.

The bank said I was behind on a mortgage.

It said the property could be taken if I did not act.
