The morning after I finished my MBA, the air outside campus smelled like wet concrete, roses, and cheap champagne.

Families were taking pictures under gray spring light.

Mothers were fixing collars.

Fathers were holding flowers.

Somebody behind me popped a bottle so loudly that three people jumped and laughed.

I did not laugh.

I stood near a bench with my cap under one arm and my phone pressed to my ear while Samuel Pierce, my grandparents’ attorney, told me that my grandparents had left me their entire Oregon estate.

The house.

The land.

The accounts.

Everything.

At first, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“All of it?” I asked.

“All of it,” Samuel said gently. “The estate is protected through the Lewis Harbor Trust. They were very clear.”

I looked out over the crowd of graduates and families and felt something inside me go still.

My parents were not there.

My mother had texted that morning, saying there was too much family stress and she was sorry.

Family stress usually meant Ashley had cried, Ashley had panicked, Ashley needed attention, Ashley had created a problem that somehow became everybody else’s emergency.
