Luke Bennett did not remember the drive to the hospital clearly afterwards.

He remembered the rain on the windscreen.

He remembered Isabella’s hand clamped round his sleeve.

He remembered the sound she made every time the pain rolled through her body, not loud at first, just a breath pressed between her teeth as if she had been trained by fear to suffer quietly.

By the time he reached the emergency entrance, quiet was gone.

The automatic doors opened on heat, fluorescent light, disinfectant, damp coats, tired faces, and the bored shuffle of a waiting room that had already seen too much that day.

Then Luke shouted.

“Somebody help me!”

His voice cracked across the room like something breaking.

Every head turned.

A mother with a toddler on her lap froze with one hand inside a nappy bag.

An elderly man folded his paper halfway and forgot to finish the movement.

Behind the triage desk, two nurses looked up with the practised impatience of people who had heard panic in every possible tone.

Then they saw the woman in Luke’s arms.

The room changed.

She looked, at first glance, like a child.

That was the horror of it.

Not because she behaved like one, and not because her eyes held anything childish, but because her body was so small beneath the grey sweatshirt that every stranger in the room reached the same terrible conclusion before reason had time to catch up.

Her brown hair was damp against her forehead.
