Margot Stephens woke as if someone had pressed a hand over her mouth.

For a moment she lay still, staring into the dark, unsure whether the words had come from a dream or from the house itself.

Then she heard Lucas speak again.

His voice came from the study at the end of the hallway, low and calm, almost amused.

The space beside her in bed was empty.

That was what made her sit up.

Lucas did not wander about at night.

He liked routine, order, his slippers placed neatly by the bed and the house silent by half ten.

Yet at 2:03 in the morning, he was awake in his study, speaking to another man about her as though she were a problem on a page.

Rain ticked against the bedroom window.

The air felt cold where the duvet had fallen away from her shoulder.

Margot reached for her dressing gown and pushed her feet onto the carpet.

Every old habit in her told her to go back to sleep.

Every new instinct told her not to move too quickly.

She crossed the room without turning on the bedside lamp and stepped into the narrow hallway.

The house looked different at that hour.

Coats hung by the banister like figures waiting to speak.

A strip of light lay under the study door.
