At 2:00 AM, My Son Banned Me From The Birthday In My House-heuh

At 2:00 AM, I received a message from my son: “Mum, I know you bought this house for £10 million… but my mother-in-law is against you being at your grandson’s birthday.”

I replied, “I understand.”

It was the calmest thing I had written in years.

Outside, the rain was thin and almost soundless, the sort that turns windows silver and pavements black without ever announcing itself.

Inside, my kitchen felt too bright.

The kettle had clicked off a few minutes earlier, though I had no memory of filling it.

A mug sat untouched beside my phone.

A birthday card for my grandson lay open near the fruit bowl, the ink still dark where I had written, With all my love, Grandma.

Then James’s message arrived.

My son.

My only son.

No mother receives a message at two in the morning without feeling her stomach drop.

I opened it quickly, already standing from the chair, already imagining an accident, an ambulance, a frightened child.

But there was no panic in the message.

There was something worse.

There was obedience.

“Mum, I know you bought this house for £10 million to secure the family’s future… but my mother-in-law is against you being at your grandson’s birthday. She says your presence makes the guests uncomfortable.”

I sat down again.

I read it once.
