It was supposed to be one of those stiff family breakfasts where everyone behaved politely enough for the neighbours and cruelly enough for me to remember why I rarely came round.

Rain was tapping against the kitchen window, soft and steady, and the narrow room smelled of toast, frying oil and the sharp lemon of washing-up liquid.

The kettle had just clicked off.

A row of mugs sat near the sink, each one filled differently because even tea had rules in my parents’ house.

Emma was four, small for her age, and proud of every tiny thing she could do by herself.

She had carried her plate from the counter with both hands, walking carefully as if it were made of glass.
