A 9-year-old girl stopped me inside my own mansion and said, “You promised my mum she’d be paid today.”

The house was quiet in the way only very large houses can be quiet, with every sound travelling too far.

Rain touched the tall windows in thin silver lines.

Somewhere below, a kettle clicked off in the staff kitchen, followed by the soft clatter of mugs and the scrape of a chair being moved back into place.

My jacket was draped over my arm.

My mind was still full of figures, signatures, deadlines, and careful phrases designed to keep powerful men calm while very large sums of money moved from one place to another.

I remember thinking I had one more call before lunch.

I remember thinking nothing in that house could surprise me.

Then a child’s voice cut through the corridor.

“You lied to my mum.”

I stopped so abruptly my shoe slid half an inch on the polished floor.

For a moment, I thought I had misheard.

Children did not confront me in my own hallway.

Staff did not raise their voices.

Problems were normally filtered through assistants, managers, forms, and quiet apologies.

But this little girl stood directly in my path as if she had been waiting for the exact moment I would have to see her.
