No explanation followed it.

No panicked call.

No sorry, no please, no typo from a woman who usually checked every message twice before sending it.

Just those words, and then, seconds later, a location pin from my mother’s own kitchen.

Rain dragged itself down the window of my flat in thin silver lines.

The television was on low, some programme I had stopped watching twenty minutes earlier, and the kettle had clicked off with that ordinary little sound which usually meant the evening was ending.

Except my evening ended the second I saw that code.

My mum had given it to me when I was thirteen, in the strange quiet after my father’s funeral.

She had found me in the utility room with my hands wrapped around a cold mug, pretending I was not frightened by how empty the house had become.

She did not cry in front of me then.

That was her way.

She had always believed that if she folded the washing, cleaned the worktops, paid the bill, and got up the next morning, the world might be persuaded not to fall apart completely.

She took a folded slip of paper from her cardigan pocket and pressed it into my hand.

“If you ever need me and can’t explain, send this,” she said.

Then she swallowed once and added, “If I ever send it to you, come.”
