The envelope came back to Harper three days after she had posted it.

She knew it before she even turned it over.

There are some kinds of rejection that announce themselves without needing to be opened.

The cream card was still beautiful, still thick beneath her fingers, still marked with the careful gold lettering she had chosen after spending an embarrassing amount of time comparing samples at her kitchen table.

She had wanted the invitation to feel warm.

When she slit the envelope open, the RSVP card was gone.

In its place sat a torn piece of notebook paper.
