At 2:03 in the morning, Margot Stephens woke to her husband’s voice coming from the study.

The house was dark, except for the thin amber line of light beneath the study door.

Rain whispered against the upstairs window, soft and steady, the sort of weather that usually made the house feel smaller and safer.

The space beside her in bed was empty.

Lucas had not gone to the bathroom.

He had not gone downstairs for water.

Almost amused.
