The night my husband left for his brother’s engagement party without me, our bedroom looked too normal for what was happening inside it.

“What exactly did your mother say about me?” I asked.

Daniel did not answer right away.

He looked at his sleeve, at the mirror, at the floor.

“She said it would be better if it stayed family only.”

The words were soft, almost embarrassed, but they still landed like a slap.

“Family only,” I repeated.

He winced.

“Daniel, I am your wife.”

“I know,” he said.
