The night Daniel went to his brother’s engagement party without me, our bedroom looked exactly the way it always did before a family event.

His watch was on the dresser.

My earrings were in the little ceramic dish beside it.

The pale blue shirt Margaret had bought him was crisp at the collar, and the rain outside made soft tapping sounds against the windows.

Everything ordinary in that room made the insult feel sharper.

I asked, “What time are we leaving?”

Daniel froze with one button left between his fingers.

He looked at me through the mirror, then looked away.

That was when I knew the evening had already happened somewhere without me.

The decision.

I had felt it for two days.

His phone had buzzed on the couch, and he had turned the screen toward his leg.

He had said “the party” instead of “Evan and Laya’s engagement party.”

When I asked whether we should bring champagne, he said he would handle it, which was Daniel’s way of stepping between a problem and me without actually touching either one.

So I stood there in our bedroom, smelling cedar from the closet and lavender from the sheets, and waited for him to become brave.
