But she believed he loved her too.

Then he invited her to a café in Santa Fe and broke the engagement like a man correcting a calendar mistake.

“Please do not take this badly,” he said, smoothing his cuff. “My career is entering a different stage. I need a wife who represents where I am going.”

Valeria stared at him.

“Where you are going?”

He sighed, wounded by the inconvenience of her pain.

“You have gained weight. You do not dress the way you used to. Camila understands these circles. She is more presentable.”

That word settled into her skin.

Presentable.

Not kinder.

Not more loyal.

Presentable.

By the time Valeria reached her parents’ house that evening, her hands were shaking so badly she could barely turn her key.
